My search for a Code of Ethics for webloggers turned out to be much simpler than I thought it would be. I expected to have to search around and maybe find some guys thoughts on ethics, which i did find plenty of, but instead I found several articles and blogs dealing with a stated and common Code of Ethics.
1) Be Honest and Fair, 2) Minimize Harm, and to 3) Be Accountable.
Further information regarding these rules can be found at http://www.cyberjournalist.net/news/000215.php
The one problem I have with this code is the fact that since there is no way to police webloggers what does it matter if there is an ethical way to blog. Sure, its nice when everybody follows the rules, but with no possible repercussions other than having your post deleted by the site what is out there to stop webloggers from saying whatever they want. This is not a problem inherent only to blogs but to anything created on the internet from blogs to facebook profiles to wikipedia entries and any website . The only way to solve the problem of unethical webloggers is not by enforcing a Code of Ethics but by not reading or subscribing to those known to be dishonest, unfair, harmful, or unaccountable. These rules should be for subscribers to decide what they want to read not to constrain the speech of others.
